  • Abstract:
Population mobility has been a well-researched topic. However, there has not yet been a holistic overview which combines the major findings of mobility researches into a coherent framework. The paper categorized the important factors found to be influential in mobility decisions into push and pull factors. Life cycle is proposed as a push factor as it represents the dissatisfaction of the existing accommodations and the perceived needs or demand for new accommodations of households. The push factor provides the motivation to move house. On the other hand, affordability of accommodation, government intervention, job opportunities and amenities of neighbourhood are the pull factors which represent the opportunities presented to households which make relocation an attractive option for them. It is proposed that the intrinsic motivations of households (the push factor) and the external variables (the pull factors) combine to form an equilibrium between current accommodation and (prospective) new accommodation. When there is change in any of the factors, the equilibrium is destroyed and households will feel the need to move house. However, the household needs the financial resources to translate the desire of moving into actual mobility.
